If you are attending or exhibiting at an upcoming event, be sure to prepare an online marketing strategy and plan for it.  Whether it is a trade show or conference, events are a great opportunity to build brand awareness and promote your company online.   There are many online channels you can use for event promotion, but we would advise you to begin with social media.  Social media is a key resource for promotion and engagement, and by executing the following steps, you will set your business up for marketing success.

Let’s first take a look at the promotional aspect…

Before the Event:

Create and/or engage in a hashtag. Create buzz by giving the event a special online presence with this way of categorizing tweets.

Does the event have its own social media presence? If so, make your presence known there as well. Post on the Facebook event page, tweet using the event’s account and set up a hashtag.

Make your schedule of events social-friendly. Allow users to “check-in” to venues. Make sure all blog posts related to the event can be easily shared on social networks and via e-mail. The schedule should either be on a dedicated mobile page or on a page that was designed in responsive.

Spread the word elsewhere online. Make sure your colleagues and peers blog about the event and be sure to have an email campaign focused on it, or maybe even a webinar. Press releases are great too.

Keep it conversational. Be sure to ask open-ended questions regarding the event that generate a response. Use social media as an opportunity to gauge interest in the event, take surveys regarding what should be featured, and use it as a forum to field questions. This also gives a chance for companies to retweet users’ responses in order to build a “word-of-mouth” hype.

Keep a countdown running. Don’t overwhelm your followers with information and messages only about the event, but be sure to have it mentioned and remind the users of it daily.

When the big day comes:

Take pictures of everything. Just when you think you’ve taken too many photos- take some more! People want to feel like they’re at the event, almost to the point where they feel like they didn’t miss out at all just by following you on social networks. Document everything as it will provide great blog content for your official site later on. Ask attendees to do the same and post on Twitter using the hashtag.

Take videos of all possible content. If anything, it’s great for your brand’s YouTube channel, but can also liven up a post-event blog entry. Also helps you sell future events.

Make your location known. If you’re attending a large scale event, make sure your followers know exactly where to find you. Tweet what room you’re in, what booth you’re at, and always use the hashtags so people know what you’re referring to. Even landmarks are helpful!

If people aren’t seeing you, MAKE them notice you. Engage with others at the event via social media so they feel compelled to come and find you.  Search the event’s hashtag and interact with those participating so you already have some background with people when you meet in person.

Did you just meet someone you want to remember? Make them remember you. Engaging with and commenting to people via social media is the new “collecting of business cards”. No need to try to remember who you hit it off with at the conference, as long as you stay engaged with them through social networks like Twitter and LinkedIn.

Tell everybody what happened. Write detailed and lively summary blogs for your company, and leave no detail out.

Once it’s all said and done, your company will have not only been an active participant on the conference room floor, but online as well. Promoting events via social media benefits you, your company, and the event.  There’s no better way to consistently engage and converse with others while spreading your brand’s name across multiple channels.

Be sure to incorporate as many of these steps as you can at your next event.  If you need a plan, or even people to help you, contact us for help. Good luck and enjoy!

Yesterday, I was fortunate enough to attend, for the first time, the Inbound Marketing Summit held at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston. I certainly took home a great deal – and not juts free T-Shirts. It was a fantastic event, from the variety of speakers to the exceptional networking that followed.

Now that I have had a chance to debrief from the day’s events, it is clear that five lessons rose above all others. Here are my five major takeaways from IMS 2012.

5. I Need to Blog More!

Immediately, I realized that I am not blogging nearly enough. I certainly wouldn’t pretend to be a captivating writer – Kathy Barry didn’t raise no liar.

But what I do know is that I have thoughts and ideas I should be put into writing. Content writing will help build my “personal brand,” a term that was used amply at yesterday’s Summit.

My Twitter handle, @tomrbarry, should be seen by as many eyes as I can possibly get it in front of. I gained roughly 25 new followers yesterday alone by Tweeting from the event. If I can start creating relevant content for these folks to see on my social profiles, I am engaging effectively.

A featured speaker yesterday, Dharmesh Shah, offered this thought: “Think of every question you get at a tradeshow or on a sales call, write them down and answer each one through blogs.”

As a sales person, that will be easy and valuable content for me to create.

4. Qualifying Sales Leads Is Hard Work

Having too many inbound leads is a problem every sales person would want to have. But, as you know, it doesn’t often work out that way.

Each lead needs to be carefully nurtured and contacted. Reaching out to someone three or four times might seem like plenty, right? Wrong.

According to Richard April, VP of Marketing, Paul Alves, CEO, and Craig Ferrara, Director of Client Operations for AG Salesworks, “the minimum amount of ‘touches’ you should anticipate for inbound leads before converting them to sales is eight times.”

To make sure you are maximizing time during the day, develop a regimented approach to qualifying these leads. Build a process.

The window to convert leads into sales is always opening and closing quickly. If you can dedicate the time – wisely – you will see results.

3. Think Mobile First

I probably heard the phrase, “mobile first,” over 100 times yesterday. And I couldn’t agree more with the idea.

Mobile is the next big thing when it comes to marketing. Bridging the gap between the physical world and the digital world is becoming so easy with the use of smartphones and other mobile technology. The fact that mobile is the fastest growing medium in the world is a startling indicator that it’s influence is only going to become more noticeable.

Having a strategy to utilize this technology is critical. When you start developing inbound, outbound and online strategies and campaigns, mobile should always be included.

If you are going to create content for your clients, understand that there is a good chance they are consuming it on a mobile device.

2. All Aboard The Google+ Train

Google makes sure that marketers and online officials are keeping the playing field even. Part of Google’s new algorithm stresses the importance of authors of posts and content – rather than pages. This means you need to start building the authority of your writers through Google.

A Google+ profile is one way to do this. A solid presence on Google+ will build credibility and recognition by the search engine. Include links to valuable content. A strong network on Google+ will, conceivably, build the influence and reach of your writers. A personal brand is becoming more important than keywords.

1. Invest Time In Social Conversations

Whether you are in sales, marketing, public relations or administration, taking the time to engage and connect with real people on social channels is very important. You must engage to communicate and have conversations – not constantly offering your sales pitch.

Monaco Lange said that we should, “stop selling products, start telling stories.” I need to incorporate real world problems and find solutions that will solve those problems. Create  content that is valuable, sharable and likeable.

The stories I tell should demonstrate the benefits of the tools and services I sell. No one will engage with your content if it isn’t worth having a conversation about.

A Question For Readers

Social media is an outstanding tool for businesses – large and small alike.

However, one thing I see over and over again is the false notion that simply having a social media presence is enough to widen the sales funnel and boost profits overnight.

At this year’s LPIA Innovation Conference, I will be speaking about what you actually need to do in order to grow your business with social media.  I am thrilled to be afforded this opportunity because social media for business – your business – is something I truly believe in.

Presentation Preview

During this presentation, which is entitled “Connect, Build, Sustain: Growing Your  Business with Social Media“, I will shed light on the importance of understanding how your target audience uses social media.

This includes items such as:

  • Knowing what networks they use
  • Knowing when they use them
  • Knowing how they use them

I will also discuss ways that you can drive traffic from your social networks to your website. This is a key step that many companies miss — but that is an essential step for generating leads and sales!

Social media, search engine optimization, website design, strategic plans and tactics all are necessary cogs in your business machine.

After my presentation, you will be equipped with actionable ideas and practical advice borne from successful case studies.

Are You Ready to Move Forward?

Social media, despite its inherently creative appearance and perception, very much needs a hard and fast plan behind it.

I cannot stress enough the importance of a carefully crafted plan fleshed out to best benefit your company. Your accounts will need to be updated regularly with engaging, educational and inspiring content. A sports car is no good if there is no gas in the tank.

Social media can, and will, work for you.

I hope to see you at my session at this year’s LPIA Innovation Conference to get you started on the path to profit.

I promise that when I’m done, you’ll be equipped with the knowledge and tools to start connecting, building, and sustaining success through online marketing efforts.

My presentation is scheduled for Friday, November 9th at 2:15 PM.

When it comes to social media, many companies primarily focus on the task of creating, finding, and distributing content.

That certainly is an important aspect to one’s online marketing efforts.

However, when it comes to truly unlocking the potential power of social media, it really is only part of the equation.

Social Media as a Listening Tool

One of the other big areas where companies should focus is in using social media as a listening tool.

There is so much data being shared on social networks each day. There are hundreds of millions of Tweets and Facebook posts. There are pictures and videos being posted every second.

By putting forth the effort to mine that data, businesses can uncover key insights and trends.

How can they do that effectively?

Well, I am quite excited to say that I’ll have the chance to speak on that exact topic at the upcoming Integrated Print Forum!

Session and Event Details

The Integrated Print Forum is being put on the folks at the Printing Industries of America (PIA) association.

It will take place on Monday, October 29th and Tuesday, October 30th.

The session that I’ll be speaking on is titled “Tracking Tools for Super Sleuths: Managing Your Social Engagement.”

My session will occur on Monday the 29th from 2:00-2:50 p.m.

During this session, I will share a variety of strategies and tools that you can use to effectively incorporate a social media listening strategy.

I will cover items such as:

  • A list of the listening tools that are available for social media
  • What kind of investment is needed in social media, from beginner to advanced users
  • Tools and strategies for discovering and connecting with one’s audience

I look forward to discussing those items and more at this event!

One Final Thought

Now, the big question is this — Will I see YOU at the Integrated Print Forum?

I hope so!

In the meantime, make sure to listen to (and engage with!) the social media chatter about #IPF2012!

Are you enjoying your summer?

I hope so! It’s sure been busy here at work at Grow Socially and interlinkONE, but I’ve also had the chance to enjoy some beautiful weather.

However, things are about to get even busier over the next two months with events.

One of the events that we’ll be participating in is the NAQP/NAPL Owners Conference in Chicago.

Dean D’Ambrosi, VP of NAPL Member Relations, recently recorded the video below regarding this event.

If you are on the fence as to whether you should attend or not, Dean does a great job of sharing some compelling reasons in a just a few minutes!

I hope to see you there!

P.S. Do you need one more reason to attend after watching the video? Here’s one — I’ll be speaking! I’m quite excited to have the chance to moderate a panel that is entitled “Finding Success in Online Marketing: Social Media, SEO, and More!”
