I just wanted to take a moment to share a quick tip that may help you to achieve a very important marketing goal — driving more traffic to your website!

As I’ve mentioned before, many LinkedIn users are unaware of the fact that they can share up to 3 websites on their personal Profile page.

One way to improve the effectiveness of those three links is by customizing the Link description.

The best way to do this is to choose the “Other:” option from the dropdown that accompanies your link. By doing that, you’ll be given access to another text input box where you can enter a custom description.

LinkedIn Profile Tip: Use the 'Other' option to enter a custom call to action for your links.

Thus, rather than having your link be titled “Company Website”, you could have it say, “Learn About [Company Name]” or “Visit [Company Name] Today!”. Simply modifying the call-to-action may help to increase the number of click-throughs on those links, and thus, increase the number of website visitors.

I hope that you find this tip helpful as you look for ways to improve your online marketing efforts!

When it comes to LinkedIn, many people use that social network as a way to accumulate connections.

And while it can certainly be used for so much more, we do need to recognize that many LinkedIn users primarily use the tool to examine personal Profiles.

Because of that, it’s very important to ensure that we keep our LinkedIn profile filled out and up-to-date.

LinkedIn Profile and the Websites Field

One feature that many people overlook in that regard is the Websites field of a LinkedIn profile.

Sure, they might list one Website there. Typically, it point to their company’s website.

But many people fail to realize that LinkedIn allows you to enter up to 3 websites in a Profile.

Why would you want to do that? The answer is simple: because it can help expose the always-growing LinkedIn audience to more online content about your brand and/or your company.

Connecting Multiple Websites To Your Account

If you’re wondering how to connect multiple websites to your LinkedIn profile, it’s easy.

  • Log-in to LinkedIn, click the “Profile” link in the top menu, then click the “Edit Profile” link.
  • Find the “Websites” section (currently this is listed below the “Connections” field)
  • If you have not already added 3 websites, then you should be able to click the “+Add a Website” link.

What Websites Should You Include?

The answer to that question really depends on two things: what online content do you have available to share, and which of that content will have the biggest appeal and impact on your target audience?

One option would be to include a link to your corporate website, your personal Blog, and to a YouTube video.

But you could certainly decide to include a link to another social networking profile, if you thought that would help to engage the people that are visiting your LinkedIn profile.

I hope that you find this tip helpful!

When Google+ was first released in 2011, there certainly was a lot of buzz in the marketing world.  However, for many of us, the reaction was this: “Oh no; do we really have another social network to worry about?

Well, if you have been neglecting adding Google+ to your marketing activities up until now, you may want to re-think that approach! Here’s why.

Search Plus Social

Last week, Google announced that they were going to make some fairly significant changes to their search engine. They labeled these changes “Search, plus Your World”. These enhancements would dramatically change the search results that were presented to logged-in users. The results presented to people would now greatly incorporate the social networking data that a person is connected to — at least the social networking data that Google had access to.

Users would notice this difference throughout the links, images, and videos that were presented by Google’s search engine. Yes, what a person saw two weeks ago as the #1 result when they searched for “printing services” could now be radically different, based on their social network connections.

Since Google only has access to the data within so many social networks, Google+ is playing a major role in the changes that they’ve made to their search engine.

This has caused a number of debates to arise as to whether their actions are fair and justified. But for people like us — those that are looking to do whatever we can to grow our business — we must react to the reality.

And the reality is this: If we want people to find our business online, we need to be on Google+!

How to Get Started with Google+

Google started rolling out these changes to users last week. Thus, chances are very good that you have access to them.

Below are a few things that you can do now to take take advantage of these enhancements:

  • If you don’t already have one, create a Google Profile.
  • Once you have a profile, make sure that you log-in to Google before you run your next Search.
  • Get on Google+! It’s free to create an account.
  • Google+ allows you to have a personal profile, of course. But you can also create Pages for your Business, Products & Services, Events, and more.
  • Start creating and publishing content on your Google+ profiles and pages
  • Build your Google+ community: Take the time to add people and Pages to your Circles and invite others to do the same for your accounts.

It certainly will be interesting to see how companies adapt and benefit from these changes.

Once you’re logged in to your Google profile, start running a few searches. It can be quite fascinating to see how the “Personal Results” change what is presented to you.

If you have a free moment, check out the video that Google has released regarding the “Search, plus Your World” functionality below. I think it does a great job of demonstrating the importance of using Google+ in one’s marketing efforts.

P.S. These changes have absolutely motivated me to increase my personal Google+ usage. Feel free to “Circle” me there!

After making a big splash at the F8 conference, Facebook has rolled out its Timeline feature to all users.

While there were ways to activate it prior to today, the mainstream public now has the chance to hate it complain about it love it.

(My personal opinion: I dig it! It really can be quite a trip to scroll through the pieces of your life that are connected to your Facebook page).

Here are a few things to know:

You Can Activate the Timeline Feature Right Now

Log-in to Facebook and head to http://www.facebook.com/about/timeline.

In the bottom-right corner, click the “Get Timeline” button.

Facebook: Activate the Timeline Feature

7-Day Review Period

After you’ve activated the Timeline, Facebook will provide a 7-day review period that allows you to make changes to any of the content that appears on your page.

Of course, you can choose to publish your Timeline at any point during that period. From that point on, people will see the Timeline view when they look at your profile. Until then, they will see the existing Profile page layout.

How to Hide or Feature a Post

As you scroll through your timeline, you may come across stories that you would like to feature or hide.

To feature an item, simply roll over the story and click the star. This will expand the story to two columns, which absolutely gives it more prominence on your page.

Or you can click the pencil to hide, delete or edit a post.

The Cover Photo

One of the first things you’ll notice on the Timeline feature is the spot for the Cover Photo.

This is separate than your Facebook Profile photo.

I’ve seen some people do some very creative things with how they use the space for the Cover Photo. Here’s how mine currently looks:

Google+ has certainly been creating buzz in the social networking world for a few months now. However, because it was in an invitation-only/beta mode for most of that time, I believe that its growth potential had a cap.

However, Google recently started to change that policy. People no longer need an invitation to create join the social network — it’s now available to anyone that has a free Google account.

I do think that change will help to further increase Google+ adoption. If you decide to take the step to give it a try, here are three tips that may help you to get more out of the experience:

Take the Time to Fill out Your Profile

One of the bigger complaints that I’ve heard from people that have dabbled with Google+ is that there’s “nothing happening there”. Yes, of course, your Google+ stream will most likely not be able to compete with your Facebook Wall for awhile in terms of activity. You will need to actively find and follow other people. But before we talk about that, it’s important to talk about this — what can you do to make it easy for people to find you? Also, what can you do so that people will want to follow you?

One of the biggest things involved in accomplishing those items is to fill out your Google+ profile.

Google provides a number of fields that can help you to truly tell your story. These include Introduction, Bragging Rights, Employment, Occupation, Education, Places Lived, etc.

Also, you can use pictures to share information about yourself to others. Of course, this includes your Profile picture. But beyond that, you can upload other photos that will appear to people that view your profile.

Taking the few moments to share relevant information about yourself through those fields and features may increase the chances that other Google+ users will find and follow your profile.

Search for People to Follow

Google+ allows you to find people through the main Search box at the top of the page. You can certainly search for people by name. Also, you can search for people by specific keywords through that field. For example, you could type the words “printing” into the Search box, click Enter, and then search under the “People” tab to find people that may have that term somewhere in their profile.

There are certainly far less people on Google+ than there are on Twitter and Facebook. Thus, I would encourage that you be willing to follow a wide variety of folks — not just people that you know offline or that are in your industry.

Of course, the more people that you follow, the busier your stream will get. One way to deal with that is to take advantage of Google+’s Circles feature. Google provides some default circles, but you can also create your own. This will enable you to better classify your online friends into how your mind may classify them.

As Google+ becomes more popular and people start sharing more information there, the Circles feature may enable you to still maximize the value that can come from the network.

Be Committed to Share and Comment Beyond 140 Characters

I admit it — I’m still figuring out how much I should share on Google+. Also, I’m still trying to determine what exactly I should share. But I have noticed this: many people are finding success with their Google+ posts by taking advantage of the fact that the character limit is well beyond what many other social networks offer.

Twitter and Facebook have forced many people to cut down on the words that they would typically use to make an observation or share an article. And in some cases, that’s a good thing! However, there are some subjects that need to have a more in-depth conversation around them. Google+ certainly allows for this.

Along with expanding on your thoughts when you share content there, you can also provide longer and more insightful comments when you engage with someone else’s posts as well.

A lot of people have noted that they are seeing much higher engagement levels on Google+ than they do on Facebook and Twitter. This is certainly not because they have similar user levels! Rather, I do think that having the ability to really express your thoughts a bit more is contributing to that.

Moving Forward

If you do get on Google+ in the near future, I hope that you enjoy it. Please feel free to connect with me there!
