With more photography apps becoming available on smart phones each day, it seems like everyone is trying to snap and post the most creative photos possible.  And we’re not saying that’s a bad thing!

In fact, the more eye-catching photos you distribute, the more response you are likely to receive from your audience.  We spotted three associations using this approach at recent events, and they each had their own unique strategy for utilizing photography to make engaging content.

MFSA (Mailing and Fulfillment Service Association) had its Annual Conference this past summer, and they hosted their event at the historical Grove Park Inn.  Because of the beautiful scenery there (in Asheville, North Carolina), the MFSA team wanted to share it with their online audience.  They were able to capture this fantastic photo (shown on the left) with Instagram.

TLMI (Tag and Label Manufacturers Institute) recently exhibited at September’s Labelexpo Americas Conference.  There, they showed off their booth by making a photo collage, which showcased their logo, seating area, and its members’ logos.  The phone app they used to create this is FrameMagic.

NAPL (National Association Printing Leadership) is preparing for their upcoming Owners Conference and Graph Expo this weekend.  They decided to give their online audiences a teaser of what attendees can expect at their booth by also creating a photo collage.  What is especially great about this photo example is that they added a call to action for attendees to visit their booth.  They also added in Graph Expo’s hashtag, #GraphExpo, and highlighted the name of their association.  You can create photo collages like this one with InstaFrame.

Photos are not only extremely entertaining to create and look at, but they are becoming a very strong marketing tool as well.  Take advantage of the popular photo apps on your smart phone and discover what you can create in a matter of seconds.

How many of you are using social media for your business today?

That is the question we asked at the roundtable discussion I led at the MFSA conference on Monday, June 25 in Asheville, NC. Out of the ten participants, six answered that they currently are using social media for their business. And there was consensus among all ten that before a company can offer social media strategy as a service to clients, they must be able to use social media successfully for themselves.

If your company is eager to jump into social media but doesn’t know where to start, don’t worry. There are very common barriers at the beginning of the process – and that is what it is, by the way, a process – that we can highlight here and help you overcome.

Common Question #1 – Where do I find new content to share? And when do I find the time to do it?

Answer: This is one of the most frequently asked questions I receive. And while the answer isn’t overly complicated, it does require some time, patience and dedication.

There is an inordinate amount of great content out there on the internet. Set up an RSS feed, a news aggregator, like Google Reader, Google Alerts, the Flipboard App, or one of countless others. But if you are going to plan on offering social media services to clients one day, you need to do more than simply recycle the material of other sites. To prove that you are an expert, you will need to generate your own content.

Have multiple members of your team be responsible for frequent and consistent blogging. And while we’re on this point, understand that running a social media platform is not just a side job. Hire someone to truly focus on this work. Just because it is free doesn’t mean it’s easy.

Finally, make sure you have a a thoughtful and thorough plan for your posting strategy. Never do anything blind in business, social media very much included. Always have an idea of what you plan on posting on any given day.

Common Question #2: How do I know if anyone even cares about what I post?

Answer: Shorten and track your links. When you are sharing anything, use a link shortener such as ilink.me to enable tracking capabilities. Be cognizant of when your links receive the most clicks, the nature of the link and some of the key words you use to encourage those clicks. Be diligent. More clicks mean more engagement with your audience and hopefully more traffic to your website. And if you are maximizing your clicks on fresh, native content, your SEO will reap the benefits.

Common Question #3: How do I turn social media efforts into sales?

Answer: It’s not enough to just have a Facebook, Twitter, etc. Having a page is only the first step. Social media needs to be integrated with your overall marketing strategy and business philosophy. Incorporate calls to action in your posts. Encourage viewers to sign up for a white paper, an eNewsletter, registrations for webinars…whatever you can think of. These items get you real contact information from people who have proven that they are willing to get to know you a little better.

Also, use social media to show who your team members are. Give your prospects a glimpse into the daily life of your office. By showcasing your team members and their personalities, you are humanizing your brand and encouraging business.

From February 21st through the 24th, folks from both Grow Socially and interlinkONE and will be attending the 2012 MFSA Mid-Winter Conference in Phoenix, Arizona.

What is the Mid-Winter Conference?

The Mailing and Fulfillment Services Association (MFSA) always brings together a great collection of folks at their events, including the annual Mid-Winter Conference. This year’s event promises to continue that trend. Folks from all aspects of the mailing and fulfillment industries will be there — including representatives from the USPS, owners of mail and fulfillment companies, hardware and software vendors, and people that run the day-to-day operation at their facilities.

Needless to say, we are quite excited about the opportunity to participate in this year’s Mid-Winter Conference.

If you will be attending, we looking forward to seeing you! Here are a few things that you may want to keep an eye on:

Presentation from John Foley, Jr.

On Thursday, February 23rd, our CEO John Foley, Jr. will deliver a presentation and moderate a star-studded panel. Their theme is “A New Path to Profit: Business Transformation a Multi-Channel World“.

This session will take place from 10:30am until Noon.

During those 90-minutes, John and the panelists will discuss the challenges that service providers may face as they seek to adapt in a multi-channel world! They will share strategies, plans, tips, technologies, and tools that they are using to help their business grow!

Launch of a Book for the Mailing and Fulfillment Industries!

The 2012 MFSA Mid-Winter Conference will be the official launching pad for our CEO John Foley, Jr.’s new book!

Titled “Business Transformation: A New Path to Profitability for the Mailing and Fulfillment Industries”, this book is packed with case studies and growth strategies that are specific to the mail and fulfillment services providers.

Make sure visit our table in the Vendor area to pick up your copy of this book!

Benefits of our Warehouse Management and Automation Software

Our VP of Sales Karen DeWolfe will be on hand throughout the conference. If you are looking for ways to streamline your warehouse and inventory operations, make sure to spend some time with her!

Karen will be able to provide you with an overview of the latest enhancements to our ilinkONE Version 8 software. Let her know which areas you are looking for help in — whether it’s related to online ordering, inventory management, order processing, pick tickets and packing slips, shipping or more — and she will show you how our solution can help!

Learn How to Make Money with Mobile

There is no doubt that mobile is having a dramatic impact on the way that people communicate and consume information.

We will demonstrate how solutions that incorporate QR Codes, mobile websites, and more can be used to increase the effectiveness of print, mail, and fulfillment.

Ideas to Help You Improve Your Marketing Efforts

There is no doubt that service providers face tremendous pressure today to remain relevant and grow their business.

One way that they can do this is by increasing the effectiveness of their own self-promotional efforts. Grow Socially’s Vice President Dena Woerner will be at the conference, and she’d love to chat about ways that you can grow your business through website improvements, SEO, and social media efforts.

See You There!

We hope to see you in Phoenix! MFSA Mid-Winter Conference, here we come!

I am absolutely passionate about social media.

I also am passionate about the mail and fulfillment industry.

But can those two passions mix? Specifically, can a company that provides mailing and/or fulfillment services use social media to promote their business and generate more leads?

Would you like to know the answer?

I am quite happy to have the opportunity to discuss that latter question in more detail at a meeting on February 1st, 2012 of the Mailing and Fulfillment Services Association (MFSA) New York Chapter.

While I’m there, I’ll be delivering a presentation titled “How You Can Improve Your Marketing Efforts”. My content is specifically geared to folks in the mail and fulfillment industries.

I will discuss cross-media and multi-channel marketing campaigns, but I will also spend a lot of time focusing on providing actionable advice for attendees specifically in the social media space.

Will you be attending? I’d love to see you there!

While we endure another relentless wave of snowstorms, we can take some comfort knowing our CEO, John Foley, is currently soaking up the sun in Miami for the 2011 MFSA Mid-Winter Conference.

Here is a quote directly from the conference website. “MFSA reinvents the Mid-Winter conference to make it bigger and better than ever. Managers and executives from mailing, fulfillment and printing companies may now take advantage of an expanded Mid-Winter Conference program, which includes Plant Tours for the first time. This expanded program now contains sessions that appeal to sales, marketing, and operations, while company owners, CEOs and presidents can still find great value in the sessions directed to strategy.”

The MFSA Mid-Winter Conference hosts many informative and exciting speakers and educational sessions. They are all targeted to growing your business and measuring results. And above all, there is a chance for face-to-face interaction and networking with colleagues all over the country.

Charming Charleston

Upon my arrival to Charleston, South Carolina, I knew there was a good chance that Charleston would capture my heart as I had heard only good things before my trip. As I drove from the airport into downtown, the old buildings, preppy store fronts, palm trees, and the southern accent of the driver had me sold. Within an hour of getting off of the plane, Charleston had become one of my favorite cities.

The MFSA Annual Conference was held at the Francis Marion Hotel located in the heart of Charleston on King Street. The Francis Marion Hotel is newly reopened after a renovation to encapsulate the hotel’s former grandeur from when it originally opened in 1924. The staff of the hotel could not have been more hospitable to all attendees, happily helping us with our every need. One of our favorite parts of the conference was the interlinkONE dine around. Grow Socially was there showing attendees how to download the proper software on their smart phones to update their social media accounts; some people got up and running for the first time. We also got to use visibletweets.com to show a live feed of tweets at #MFSA. Everyone loved seeing their tweets projected onto the wall.

The juxtaposition between old and new in Charleston was intriguing to say the least. Newer shops and restaurants seemed to fit seamlessly between much older churches, markets, and other buildings; some dated all the way back to the 1700’s. I was even fortunate enough to have some time to walk along King Street and to explore an art festival that was taking place in Marion Square, right across the street from the hotel. Although it was a scorcher of a week, my time in Charleston was not tarnished. I got to eat at some great restaurants, spend an afternoon shopping in  boutiques and visit with friends, both old and new.

Overall, I was charmed by Charleston; it was the perfect spot for the MFSA Annual Conference. I can’t wait to go back.
