This week, we will be getting to know interlinkONE and Grow Socially’s newest member, Bruce Owens, a sales executive.

Sometimes, you can just see it.

At interlinkONE and Grow Socially, we pride ourselves on having a relaxed, familial atmosphere. It’s always exciting when we get to include someone new into the fray, with new stories and experiences to enhance our daily operations.

This time, that comes in the form of Bruce Owens.

Sitting down with Bruce for just a few minutes was all it took to see the passion and conviction he is going to bring to 21 Concord Street every day.

“I was inspired to work here after reading John (Foley)’s book,” recalls Bruce. “On my first day, he signed it and handed it to me. There are so many similarities and parallels between John and me. I love John’s vision. This is a great opportunity to get back to selling to the people I feel comfortable with.”

Bruce brings a wealth of experience to interlinkONE. “I come from a high tech background, going back to the dot com days,” says Bruce.

“Before that, I sold financial software on Wall Street, to traders, portfolio managers, people like that,” he says.

In addition, Bruce also worked in similar industries, selling data and marketing solutions.

Beyond his zeal for salesmanship, Bruce has two distinct passions outside of the office.

“I play a lot of guitar outside of the office,” says Bruce, a hobby that started when he was just five years old. “I build a lot of custom guitars, do some custom work,” he says.

He points to Jimmy Page as being one of his biggest musical inspirations, and is currently working through the Led Zeppelin guitarist’s biography. His interests range from the metallic genius of Page to the unmistakable creativity of Eddie Van Halen – right on down to the trailblazing jazz styling of John Coltrane and Miles Davis.

Aside from his melodic chops, Bruce is also a connoisseur of fine breweries.

“I’ve done a lot of independent consulting for breweries,” says Bruce, “helping with marketing plans. Every now and then I’ll get a random beer in the mail, just asking my opinion.”

But Bruce’s focus today is on his new job, and his belief in interlinkONE. “I’m hoping my days will have a ton of customer contact,” says Bruce, “building and massaging those relationships. I plan on hitting the phones hard.

“I’m already trying all kinds of different companies, whether we are a fit or not, but we should be having a conversation, and having them on a daily basis.”

This week, we will be getting to know Jacques Gingras, Senior Software Engineer at interlinkONE.

If you have ever visited the interlinkONE office, you have certainly seen the hidden jewel that dwells in the back of our home – flanked by a large glassed-in conference room and multiple offices.

A navy blue, STIGA brand ping pong table rests quietly, almost mocking those who dare to take down the one man who owns it.

That man is Jacques Gingras. The undisputed king of the interlinkONE ping pong hierarchy.

Jacques is the Senior Software Engineer of the interlinkONE development team, and has been with the company for a total of eight years, but is currently on his second stint.

“I started here during my senior year of high school (at Shawsheen Tech), in a co-op program,” said Jacques, a Canadian transplant. Born in the Quebec province, he could not officially work yet in the United States while he was still in high school, so his internship with interlinkONE was a perfect start.

“I ended up working here for about five years, and I left to do some construction. I did programming for them, created some construction management software,” said Jacques.

But, as we have seen before, the siren call of John Foley proved to be too strong.

“I spoke with John and he told me they were looking for more help. This March, it will be three years since I started back with the company.”

Many may not know that Jacques grew up near Ottawa, or that he only spoke French before moving to this area at 11 years old. But the one thing he is sure most people don’t know about him?

“My full first name is Jacques Olivier.”

Jacques’ day to day routine has shifted since his early days, from a role primarily developing software to more of a support role. “For a time I was managing workflow, even did some training,” said Jacques. “Now it is mainly developing, second tier support, a bunch of everything.”

Jacques has plenty of hobbies outside of the office, many of which he enjoys with his wife, Michele. Their eighth anniversary will be this month. He “dabbles” in music, with experience on ukulele, piano and guitar. He will be taking polo lessons this month, and can still read and understand French.

“We love to travel,” he said. “Sedona, Italy, Ireland, France, a few cruises. We also do a lot of volunteer work.”

Jacques also alluded to a bit of culinary acumen. “I love to cook. We make pizza every week, pasta carbonara, petite lamb chops, lasagna, pulled pork… those are some of my staples.”

A true team player, Jacques has loved being a part of the development team at 21 Concord Street.

“When you are working on a cool feature that you know is helpful to customers, it is very satisfying,” he said. “I thrive on the feedback I get, whether it be from coworkers or clients.”

“The atmosphere (in the development room) has been great, we have a great camaraderie,” he said. “Everyone enjoys working together, the support team, the dev team, the marketing team. The dev team certainly enjoys beating up on the marketing team at the ping pong table.”

Aside from the clear jab at the marketing team (who has improved mightily at the ping pong table, if I may add) Jacques is a true interlinkONE star player.

This week, we’ll be getting to know Lou Cimaglia, public relations and content marketing specialist at interlinkONE and Grow Socially.

The interviewer has become the interviewee.

Each Friday we get to meet a member of our team here at 21 Concord Street. These posts are enjoyed by our loyal readers and customers, but especially by those of us who work here at interlinkONE and Grow Socially.

These flattering posts showcase our knowledge of the industry and bring to light our more interesting (and often unknown) out-of-office activities. Without fail these posts trigger some great office debates and often humorous email chains, but the time has finally come to “get to know” the man responsible for letting us “get to know” ourselves.

Lou, like many employees here, got his start in the office after getting to know John Foley through the Wilmington, MA community. A camp he was working for with his friend, Tom Barry (we’ll get to that relationship in a moment) needed help hosting their website, so, of course, interlinkONE was the place to turn.

John let the pair know that he’d like their help as interns once they were done assisting the camp. So in the summer of 2010, before their junior year of college, Lou and Tom got their start helping out the newly formed Grow Socially.

Lou, then an undergraduate PR major at Westfield State, was immediately put to work creating content and writing blogs.

“Right from the start they gave me a lot of creative license,” recounts Lou. “I know my role is to boost traffic, inbound leads, and ultimately sales, but at the time I had very little marketing experience. I learned a lot right off the bat.”

This relationship between content marketing and sales, is appropriate as Lou’s forte is content marketing and his good friend, Tom’s, is sales. Both playing a crucial role in the inbound marketing process.

Many of us around the office have envisioned Tom and Lou as always being close friends, but Lou dispels the rumors their friendship began in the sandbox or the crib.

“I’ve known him for a long time, but it wasn’t until high school and student government where we first worked together,” explains Lou, who was Class President for his four years at WHS – and Tom was his VP.

Lou, whose father happens to be involved in local politics as a Member of the Board of Selectman, continued his service to his school in college where his was the Student Body President at Westfield.

“Service is something my parents instilled in me. I really just love to help.”

This same lend-a-hand attitude has carried over into our offices, where Lou routinely has his days shaken up and his talents enlisted to aid in other projects. Blogging is the “glue,” as he puts it, to his day, but at any point he can be found interviewing someone in the videos booth, putting together a presentation for a speaking engagement, or editing John’s next book.

Lou is a writer at heart and counts himself as fortunate to have been able to combine his passion with his career. He got his professional start at the age of 13, when he reached out to the editor of the Wilmington Town Crier to cover high school football and continued working with the local paper for six years.

To this day, Lou is an avid sports fan, keeping up on our New England sports teams. His family has Red Sox season tickets, and he says he’s grateful to get to about five games each summer. He’s hopeful that this year’s team may be able to surprise many.

He’s also a bit of an audiophile with classic rock and country tastes.

“Piano Man by Billy Joel has always been my favorite song, for as long as I can remember,” says Lou, “and I’m always trying to make it to concerts.”

Recently, he’s been dabbling at learning the guitar. It sounds like he is steadily amassing a strong, yet admittedly short, acoustic set—emotionally drawing late-night listeners in with the ’90s classic, Let Her Cry, and following up with modern day sing-a-long, Wagon Wheel, so far so good.

Lou is also a bit of a cook, and his specialty also happens to be his favorite food (see below).

Lou’s talents give us a voice here at 21 Concord Street, and we’re lucky that they’ve also given us a chance to learn so much about one another with this series.

NOTE: I’m not sure how Lou keeps these posts to a readable length, but we’ll certainly be leaving them up to the pro with our upcoming installments. (And I’ll be doing so with an even greater level of appreciation.) Also, a quick ‘thanks’ to my fellow team members, Kelly and Kerri, on some great hard-hitting questions for our office enquirer.

This week, we’ll be getting to know Ginny Ciampa, interlinkONE and Grow Socially’s controller.

We thought the day would never come.

Easily the most elusive of all of the Meet The Team subjects to this point, Ginny Ciampa is not one for the spotlight.

Ginny is interlinkONE’s Controller, and will have been working behind the scenes with the company’s finances and HR for 11 years come this spring.

How she got her start here is one of the more entertaining stories that our team has come up with to date.

“I got my start here because Mikey and Trevor got in trouble,” she said. Mikey, her son, now a UMass-Dartmouth freshmen and Trevor Foley, John Foley’s son, a freshmen at Worcester State, were in trouble during their first grade recess.

“I got a call from the assistant principal, and that’s where I met Melanie (John’s wife). We connected, and at that point they were looking for someone to work in the finance department (at interlink). It was only supposed to be part time, but that’s how it all began.”

Ginny now controls all of the finance and HR efforts of the company, ranging from paying all the company bills, managing the budget, corporate tax returns, compliance measures, employee hires and compensation, operations – a wide array of responsibilities.

“A normal 9-5 is a ton of meetings,” said Ginny. “It’s just making sure everything gets handled.”

Ginny noted that her favorite part of the job would have to be her coworkers. “We have an awesome group of people,” she said. “They are committed. I think most people here like working with one another, I truly do believe that.”

“We have our moments but overall, we are just good as a team. That’s what makes this company great.”

Ginny also had laudatory statements for John Foley.

“His energy flows down to the company,” she said. “If it weren’t for his creativity, the company wouldn’t be here today. That’s the truth.”

After work, Ginny doesn’t need to go very far. “I am definitely a homebody,” she said. “I truly love when my family is all there. I’ve loved being a mother and a parent since the day I’ve had my kids, I look back and smile every time, on every aspect of it.”

Ginny lives in Wilmington with her husband Mike, and her three children – Kim, 22, Mikey, 19, and Stevie, 17. Kim and Mikey are also interlinkONE employees.

“I love cooking, reading, being outside,” said Ginny. “Walking, being near the ocean…it doesn’t take much to make me happy. I’m very simple.”

She shared that she isn’t much of a movie fan, and one of the biggest questions around her house is, “is this a Ginny movie?”

“I won’t watch anything that doesn’t have a happy ending,” she said. “If it’s stressful or suspenseful, I won’t watch it. If it makes you cry? Forget it.”

Ginny’s gentle and understanding nature make her a perfect fit for interlinkONE and Grow Socially, and her steady presence has helped guide the company for over a decade.

Rocky Balboa had Mick. Luke Skywalker had Yoda. interlinkONE has Adam Meixler.

Every company needs a mentor. A guru. Someone with all the solutions. No matter the issue, Adam has an answer. When it comes to technology and development, one would be hard-pressed to find someone more knowledgeable than Adam. A member of the interlinkONE team since his high school days, he has seen the company grow and change – and has been integral in all of it.

“I’ve done a ton of things here over the years,” said Adam. “The job has changed a bunch. When we first started and interfaced with customers in the early 2000′s, not everyone had IT guys that were knowledgeable with the internet. We did a lot of explaining about FTP, answering questions about how to get on the internet. Now I talk to customers more on a support role, customizing or building for them, how they can better use the system.”

Adam’s origin story with interlinkONE is classic. A sophomore at Wilmington High School in the late 1990′s, Adam received a call from a “random guy” who had heard Adam “was good with computers.” This guy was, of course, John Foley.

“So I say no, I blow him off,” Adam said.

A couple weeks go by and Adam began to reconsider. He was only 16 at the time, but ended up coming down to the office to talk with John. They eventually worked out a deal and Adam has been a cornerstone of the company ever since.

Adam’s main focus during work is to keep stability and normalcy – even though his days tend to have everything but those qualities.

“There are some tasks that are always on my mind, stuff that isn’t written,” said Adam. “It’s about stability, it’s about the servers and the service is up for everyone at all times. It ranges from the phone and mail systems here, to the ordering system, Qreate & Track and iFlyMobi, all of it.”

Adam also shares information internally. He delivers important news on the company’s inner workings across all departments – development, IT, support, marketing and sales.

When the day’s work is done, that doesn’t mean Adam’s fascination with tech ends. “I’m a dork, I like the technical stuff,” he said. “I like the new hardware. I love new performance tuning. When you have a database that isn’t performing well, and you can save a tenth of a second across a large number of records, that’s huge. That’s the stuff I like.”

Adam is also an avid skier, as well as a bit of a daredevil. “I love going fast, whether it is in a boat, a car, whatever.”

Anyone who works, or has worked, for interlinkONE and Grow Socially knows just how important Adam is to the team. He’s the man with all the answers. And perhaps has the greatest beard this world has ever known.

Happy new year! And be sure to check out the holiday edition of the Marketing Roundup.

posted by Lou Cimaglia | on Meet The Team | No comments

This week, we will be getting to know Kim Ciampa, a project coordinator here at interlinkONE and Grow Socially.

Each day at 21 Concord Street offers new challenges. There are multiple, bustling companies under one roof. A rich, eclectic client base sustains our operations and keeps us moving forward.

And for our employees, each day offers a brand new gauntlet to run.  This may not be truer for any of our team members than it is for Kim Ciampa.

“My day-to-day consists of a lot of different things,” said Kim. “I have my own tasks and then other people come to me with things they need. I don’t have a lot of long term projects. It’s a lot of things I know I need to get to today, or things people need right now.”

Kim is a 2012 graduate of Bryant University, with a degree in business administration. She had a double concentration in marketing and finance, as well as a minor in communication. “It was a lot of group work,” said Kim, of her collegiate experience. “We did a lot of marketing reports, some B2B, some B2C. Lots of case studies too. Those have definitely helped me in this job.”

While she spent equal time learning about finance and marketing, she knows that one of those paths is much better suited for her.

“I can’t see myself at a finance job,” said Kim. “I like marketing, I like working with people. It was interesting to watch everything in my classes and see it all come together. It really helped when I ended up moving into Grow Socially.”

Outside of the office, Kim is a big Red Sox and Patriots fan. “I love baseball and football,” she said. “I love going to games, and hanging out with my friends and family.”

Kim’s favorite part of her job is, as many before her have said, the people who surround her. “I like that we have a young group,” she said. “Everyone is learning together. We’re a startup company, but everyone has been here for a while together. We’re all learning different parts of everyone else’s job. We rely on each other.”

Instagram Feels the Heat

Reported By Donna Vieira

The news heard ’round the world last week was the change in Terms of Service with Facebook’s Instagram. While the language was mildly vague, the interpretation of it was that after January 16, 2013, every photo you posted through the service was public and advertisers would be allowed to purchase the photos directly from Instagram for use in their ads – with the user receiving no notification or compensation for the use of the photo. I wrote an op-ed on it and Instagram has since come out with multiple apologies regarding the “confusing” nature of their wording and a class action lawsuit has already been filed. People say a picture is worth a thousand words; it may be worth a few thousand dollars if this all goes through.

Facebook Rolls Out New Privacy Settings

Last week, Facebook rolled out new privacy settings that make it easier for you to pick which of your friends or subscribers can view your personal info, status updates and photos.

In the past, changes to Facebook’s privacy settings only confused me. But this actually seems like a change that will make changing your privacy settings more intuitive, as you can see in the photo below.
