There’s a fascinating recap on MediaPost regarding the incoming college freshmen class and their relationship with social networks.
I’d definitely like to encourage you to read the whole article to see the results of the 5,000 incoming freshmen that were interviewed. But here are a few of the statistics and points that caught my attention:
- “Some 91% of these people check in publicly on Foursquare and Facebook Places”
- “Two-thirds say they have looked up businesses where their friends have checked in”
- “Only 13% expect to get a cable TV package. On the other hand, 89% own a laptop, which is where they’re going to find most of their entertainment”
While it certainly is not wise to make drastic decisions based on the results of one survey, I think that these numbers should absolutely catch the attention of any business that has not invested in social networking but that might want to market to that group of folks over the next couple of years.
